Cutting Disc, Grinding Disc or Flap Disc: Which One Do You Need?

Metal cutting disc, diamond blade and flap disc

An angle grinder is only as good as the disc on it. Each type is designed for a different job, and using the wrong one is slow, wastes money and can be dangerous.

Thin cutting discs

Around one millimetre thick, these cut steel, pipe and bar quickly with little waste. They are for cutting only. Never use them to grind sideways, as they can shatter.

Grinding discs

Thicker and tougher, these remove material such as weld seams and rough edges. They are made to be used at the face of the disc, not for cutting through metal.

Flap discs

Overlapping abrasive flaps grind and blend in one step, leaving a smoother surface. A good choice for finishing welds and shaping metal. Choose a lower grit number for fast removal and a higher number for a finer finish.

Diamond blades

For tile, stone, concrete and brick, use a diamond blade. A segmented rim cuts fast and is good for concrete, while a continuous rim gives cleaner cuts on tile.

Use them safely

Match the disc size to the grinder, check the maximum speed on the disc, and wear eye protection, gloves and a mask. Keep the guard in place and replace any disc that is cracked or worn.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a cutting disc for grinding?

No. Cutting discs are thin and are made only for cutting. Side pressure can break them.

What size disc fits my angle grinder?

The size is printed on the grinder, commonly 115 mm (4.5 inch) or 125 mm. Never fit a larger disc than the guard allows.

What does the number on a flap disc mean?

It is the grit. Lower numbers such as 40 remove material quickly, and higher numbers such as 80 or 120 give a finer finish.
